Burolandschap’s Floating Bridge: Connecting Belgian Mining Landscapes

Cycling Between Terrils, Dilsen-Stokkem, Belgium / Burolandschap

Pieter Rabijns

Cycling Between Terrils is a remarkable feat of engineering and design, a floating bridge that spans a former mining area in Belgium. The project, conceived by Burolandschap, elegantly connects two former mine spoils (terrils) in Dilsen-Stokkem and Maasmechelen, municipalities deeply marked by coal mining’s legacy.

The region’s industrial past is evident in the dramatically altered landscape – the result of decades of coal extraction and subsequent gravel mining, leaving behind a unique topography of hills and a central pond. Recognizing the potential for recreation, local authorities transformed this once-industrial site into a haven for cyclists and walkers.

The centerpiece of this transformation is the innovative pontoon bridge. Instead of a straightforward crossing, Burolandschap opted for a sinuous, organic form inspired by natural shapes and the principles of the Golden Ratio. This curved design not only enhances the visual appeal but also slows cyclists down, encouraging them to savor the ever-changing vistas.

At 400 meters, Cycling Between Terrils holds the distinction of being Belgium’s longest floating bicycle bridge and a global rarity. Its modular construction, with 30 hinged elements, allows it to gracefully adapt to fluctuating water levels, ensuring its resilience and longevity.

This project exemplifies a harmonious integration of design, engineering, and environmental considerations. It serves as a testament to how a region can repurpose its industrial past, creating a unique and sustainable recreational space that celebrates its unique history while offering a captivating experience for visitors.
