A long geometric form defines the Vipp Cold Hawaii guesthouse, designed by the architecture studio Hahn Lavsen to stand out amidst the dunes surrounding Thy National Park in Denmark. Created for the homeware brand Vipp, the guesthouse features a steeply pitched roof, echoing the traditional fishermen’s cottages that dot the nearby coastline. This area is renowned for its surf conditions, earning it the nickname Cold Hawaii.
Access to Vipp Cold Hawaii is granted via a winding path that meanders through the undulating dunes, leading to a structure enclosed by white-washed walls interspersed with inset glazing. The pitched roof is adorned with Douglas fir battens, and two chimneys rise prominently, segmenting the interior into three distinct sections.
Inside, the main living areas are arranged in open spaces around the chimneys, with staircases, fireplaces, bathrooms, and ventilation systems seamlessly integrated into the thick walls. Additional white-washed partitions create smaller, intimate spaces, including a Vipp kitchen featuring an anodised-aluminium island and built-in oak cupboards, which flows into a cozy dining area.
The living space is tastefully decorated with neutral-toned furnishings, enhanced by large windows and floor-to-ceiling glazing that floods the ground floor with natural light. The guesthouse also boasts three double bedrooms and two bathrooms spread across its two levels, including a snug mezzanine bed elevated on a set of oak cupboards.
Throughout the Vipp Cold Hawaii home, Hahn Lavsen employed a minimal material palette that reflects the local vernacular, utilizing timber, bricks, and roughly white-washed interior walls crafted from concrete blocks. An exposed brick floor, laid in sand instead of mortar, extends across the ground floor, mirroring the raw beauty of the surrounding landscape.

The spaces are adorned with artwork and furnishings created by local artists, adding a personal touch and a sense of place to the guesthouse. This thoughtful integration of design and environment creates a unique retreat that harmonizes with its stunning natural setting.
