Belmond has introduced the Britannic Explorer, marking the debut of a luxurious sleeper train experience in England and Wales, with its first journey set for July 2025. This adventure, described as ‘quintessentially British,’ will feature three-night excursions through the stunning landscapes of Cornwall, the Lake District, and Wales. Travelers will have the flexibility to customize their journeys, choosing between routes that connect Cornwall and Wales or the Lake District and Wales.
The design narrative for the train’s interiors was inspired by the breathtaking British landscapes, crafted by the London-based design studio Albion Nord. Ben Johnson, the studio’s director stated that they aimed to encapsulate the essence of the country’s beauty. He noted, “From the meticulously maintained parterres of English country gardens to the wildflower meadows in our national parks and the rugged coastlines, we wanted to celebrate these elements throughout the train’s 18 cabins.”
Ottalie Stride, the creative director, emphasized the uniqueness of this project, focusing on the creation of compact yet intricately detailed interiors. She likened trains to “jewellery boxes filled with timeless elegance and playful charm.” Each cabin, from the Grand Suite to the double and twin options, is designed to evoke a refreshing and serene atmosphere, tapping into the nostalgia and romance that train travel embodies.
Albion Nord also drew inspiration from native botanicals to inform the color palette and textures throughout the train. This is particularly evident in the grand suites, which are named ‘Valerian,’ ‘Juniper,’ and ‘Elder.’ The use of oak paneling and striking graphic art by Olly Fathers further elevates the sophisticated ambiance, ensuring that every detail contributes to an unforgettable travel experience.
The observation car serves as the vibrant heart of the train, boasting a bar that evokes the charm of Victorian apothecaries. Its interior is a feast for the senses, with a warm color palette of rich fabrics and exquisite burl wood. Guests are drawn to the luxurious banquettes and chic armchairs, inviting them to indulge in the leisurely pace of travel.
In the dining cars, Malva and Samphire, renowned chef Simon Rogan has curated a menu that highlights ingredients sourced directly from his farm in the picturesque Lake District. Rogan emphasizes the essence of his culinary philosophy: “Tasty food, very natural cooking, and the best quality seasonal ingredients the UK has to offer, served by a team that is passionate about their craft.”
The powder room and wellness suite are adorned with bespoke shell artwork by Mel Campion, inspired by the beauty of marine botanicals. The calming blue tones, sleek marble countertops, and fossil-like limestone flooring create a serene atmosphere. Off-board excursions focused on wellness and fitness will enhance the journey, promoting mindfulness, movement, and a sense of adventure.
