A Madrid-based bakery has redefined the traditional bakery experience with its three distinctive locations. Inspired by the communal feast depicted in Isak Dinesen’s “Babette’s Feast,” these bakeries have placed the bread at the heart of their design.

Instead of the typical bakery counter, these shops feature large, central tables where customers can browse and select their bread. This innovative approach, designed by Zooco Studio, fosters a more interactive and inviting atmosphere. The minimalist interiors, characterized by natural materials like wood, textiles, and glass, create a warm and inviting ambiance.

Each location presents a distinct interpretation of the central theme. For example, the Orellana branch embraces an industrial aesthetic, while the La Habana site radiates a cozy, kitchen-like charm. Despite these differences, all three locations are united by a singular mission: to transform the act of purchasing bread into an unforgettable experience.

At Babette’s store on General Díaz Porlier 34, the design captures the essence of a welcoming dining room. A robust oak table stands as the centerpiece, displaying a delightful assortment of breads. The thoughtful selection of materials—wood, textiles, and glass—paired with warm, inviting lighting, cultivates an ambiance that feels more like home than a conventional retail environment.

In contrast, Babette’s store at Orellana 16 takes cues from a bakery workroom. Here, a substantial wooden table serves as the focal point for showcasing bread, while metal screens adorn the walls, providing additional exhibition and workspace. The materials evoke an industrial vibe, featuring metal profiles, microcement, terrazzo, and glass, yet wood remains a consistent element across all locations. The warm lighting softens the industrial edge, fostering a cozy atmosphere.

At Babette’s store on Paseo de la Habana 52, the design shifts to evoke a kitchen environment. A round wooden table occupies the center of a ceramic-tiled carpet, a key feature throughout the bakery. The walls are embellished with tiles of varying sizes, while microcement blankets the floor, and sprayed cement accents the upper walls and ceiling. Mirrored veneers on the furniture doors and the central leg of the table amplify the sense of space and brightness, enhancing the overall experience within the store.
