Danish studio BIG and cabin manufacturer Nokken have joined forces to create Softshell, a timber-framed tent designed to provide a low-impact accommodation option for eco-resorts and glamping sites. This innovative structure aims to minimize the need for permanent infrastructure in remote natural environments. Softshell is crafted to be a mobile shelter, easily transportable and simple to assemble by its owner, making it an ideal choice for those seeking a connection with nature.

With its blend of architectural beauty and practical functionality, Softshell presents a visually striking and environmentally conscious alternative for eco-resorts, glamping sites, and boutique hotels. As global hospitality trends increasingly lean towards eco-friendly and experiential travel, the launch of the Nokken X BIG Softshell comes at a crucial time. In the wake of the pandemic, travelers are on the lookout for unique and immersive experiences that allow them to engage with nature while still enjoying comfort and luxury.

Nathan Aylott, Creative Director of Nokken, shares with us insights on this innovative creation: “The Nokken X BIG Softshell is a response to the growing demand for adaptable, low-impact structures that harmonise with their surroundings. In collaboration with BIG, we’ve created a structure that offers both design elegance and the flexibility to adapt to various environments, be it a forest retreat, desert lodge, or even a pop-up venue for seasonal events. It’s more than just a structure—it’s a way to elevate the guest experience while prioritising sustainability.”

Softshell tents feature a square base that spans 4.2 meters in width, with a pitched roof soaring to a height of 4.75 meters. An entrance deck adds an extra 2.1 meters of floor space, enhancing the overall usability of the structure. Designed with mobility in mind, these tents have a minimal impact on the landscape, making them an excellent choice for hospitality businesses like eco-resorts and glamping sites that aim to preserve their natural surroundings. Homeowners can also benefit from Softshell tents, utilizing them as garden studios or guest accommodations.

Aylott and Van Tromp highlighted the advantages of Softshell for their hospitality clients, who often encounter challenges such as difficult access to sites or stringent local construction regulations. “Softshell addresses both,” they explained. The tent’s timber spars are lightweight and portable, enabling access to remote areas that are unreachable by trucks or cranes. Furthermore, local councils tend to be more accommodating towards canvas structures compared to traditional modular buildings, making Softshell a practical solution.

Constructed on a modular timber foundation, Softshell tents are adaptable to various landscapes and leave no lasting impact once removed. “The foundation is modular timber footing, which means it can be adjusted to different terrains without requiring any invasive groundwork,” Aylott and Van Tromp noted. “This approach aligns with their commitment to sustainability, ensuring no digging or disruption occurs. “Once the Softshell is disassembled, it leaves no lasting imprint on the environment,” they added. Currently, prototypes are in the testing phase in Canada. The Softshell is up for pre-order, with initial deliveries expected by Summer 2025. A limited number of pre-order slots will be available to ensure priority delivery. The starting price is €18,950 / £15,900 / $22,500.
