The Esch 22 Space Station, a revolutionary urban intervention in Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg, continues to redefine the possibilities of city living two years after its debut. The project, designed by 2001 TBSI, was originally conceived as a mobile sleeping pod for six—a unique way to experience the city during its 2022 tenure as a European Capital of Culture—but its impact has far surpassed its initial, temporary intent.

This innovative “space station” is elegantly contained within a sleek stainless steel trailer, equipped with all the necessary amenities, including a bathroom, kitchen, and dining area. The brilliance of its design is revealed in its ability to transform. Two wings unfold from the trailer, creating a 9-meter circular platform that is beautifully surfaced with cork. From this platform, a double-shell pneumatic dome inflates, forming the unique sleeping quarters.

Even after two years, the Esch 22 Space Station transcends the concept of a simple sleeping space; it stands as an architectural statement that sparks ongoing conversations about our connection to vital resources. Its design and technical features continue to provoke critical discussions regarding how both the design community and society at large approach the use of soil, water, and energy.
