Le Big TamTam in Hamburg’s Hanse District stands out as a remarkable food court, far from the ordinary. Crafted by the innovative German firm Studio Aisslinger in partnership with Tellerrand Consulting, this project took over four years to bring to life. It revitalizes the city’s first heritage-listed mall, Hanseviertel at Große Bleichen, transforming the traditional urban food market into a vibrant, funfair-like experience.
Bursting with color and flavor, Le Big TamTam features unique elements such as the ‘smallest bar in Hamburg’ and a central ‘Farming Tower.’ This lively atmosphere reflects the rising trend for homemade, authentic dishes found in major European cities. The culinary offerings here are impressively diverse and international, catering to a wide range of tastes.
Diners can embark on a culinary journey, savoring authentic Japanese ramen at Momo Ramen, indulging in Neapolitan pizzas complemented by craft beers from ÜberQuell, a microbrewery located in St Pauli, or enjoying the lively flavors of Mexican street food from Miguel Zaldiva. For seafood enthusiasts, classic dishes are served by Burhan Schawich and Samet Kaplan, while Yeahboy presents a fresh twist on vegan comfort food.
Beyond the enticing menus, the space accommodates up to 500 guests and boasts the smallest bar in town, perched 14 meters high and accessible via a narrow, steep staircase. Additionally, it features an artisan bakery, a stage for live concerts and DJ sets, and a dedicated events area, making Le Big TamTam a true culinary destination.
Studio Aisslinger placed a strong emphasis on fostering connectivity through design, which became the heart of their vision for the space. Every detail, whether pronounced or discreet, plays a role in crafting a narrative that reverberates across the surroundings.
The atmosphere is infused with a delightful playfulness, characterized by vibrant color combinations and dynamic geometric shapes. Custom-made furniture, including a whimsical lighting concept crafted by Studio De Schutter, adds to the unique and inviting ambiance, creating a true feel-good environment.
Werner Aisslinger, the studio’s founder, managing director, and head designer, finds particular joy in the ever-evolving pop-up concept known as The Kiosk. He describes it as “a small wonderworld,” where memories of funfairs, eclectic markets, and enchanting fairytales converge within a cozy, welcoming unit.
