CAN founder Matt Barnes has successfully completed an extension and ground floor refurbishment of a terraced house in Stoke Newington, London, creating a vibrant and functional home tailored for a young family. The renovation showcases a commitment to natural materials and a distinctive design approach, transforming the previously disconnected ground floor into a seamless open-plan kitchen and dining area. This inviting space flows effortlessly into the garden, enhanced by a bespoke curved window and an oversized glazed door that invites the outdoors in.
The former layout consisted of a series of fragmented spaces, including a conservatory that had seen better days, facing the garden. Recognizing the need for a cohesive living environment, CAN reimagined the ground floor plan by incorporating a glulam framed extension at the side and rear. This innovative addition allowed for a complete overhaul of the living, kitchen, and dining areas, fostering a sense of unity and flow throughout the home.
Flexibility was a key consideration in the design, with the introduction of full-height hemp fiber curtains and douglas fir shutters. These elements empower the family to adapt their living space according to their needs, enabling them to open up or close off areas as desired. This thoughtful approach ensures that the home can evolve with the family’s lifestyle.
Overall, the renovation not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the house but also significantly improves its functionality. The result is a beautifully designed space that balances modern living with the warmth of natural materials, making it an ideal sanctuary for a young family to thrive.
The client’s vision was deeply rooted in the serene beauty of forests, a theme that resonates throughout the design. This is beautifully showcased through the use of sustainable materials, a timber-centric interior palette, and a roof adorned with meadow plantings. The striking green timber structure not only captivates the eye but also infuses the space with warmth, embodying a low carbon solution that aligns perfectly with the client’s commitment to sustainability.
A vital element of the design was the seamless connection to the garden. The west-facing garden, elegantly framed by a custom-built curved glass window, draws the gaze outward, offering breathtaking views of the vibrant greenery while bathing the interior in natural light. The overhead glazing amplifies this effect, allowing sunlight to cascade into the space from above, enhancing the extension’s open and airy ambiance.
CAN’s dedication to fulfilling their client’s low-impact vision is clearly reflected in their choice of materials. The exterior features hemp fiber corrugated cladding, which promises to age gracefully, evolving in color and texture over time. This choice not only adds character but also reinforces the home’s sustainable ethos.
Additional elements, such as breathable lime wash paint and recycled timber terrazzo kitchen worktops, further exemplify the home’s harmonious relationship with the environment. Each detail has been thoughtfully selected to create a living space that is not only beautiful but also deeply connected to nature.
