Digital artist and designer Andrés Reisinger presents his highly acclaimed Take Over series in the historic streets of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, through a grand public art installation. Entitled ‘Take Over Jeddah’, this new artwork surpasses the limitations between the physical and digital realms, showcasing the distinctive style that characterizes the artist’s work. This remarkable addition to the Matters through Matter exhibition at Balad Al-Fann in Jeddah represents the series’ second tangible manifestation, following its initial unveiling during Miami Art Week in 2023.
Andrés Reisinger‘s Take Over Jeddah finds its place within the vibrant cultural initiative of Balad Al-Fann, which seeks to revive the UNESCO-listed Old Town of Jeddah. The physical work of the designer seamlessly merges with the exhibition’s theme, known as Past Forward, which delves into the intricate relationship between heritage and contemporary expression. Situated in the heart of the historical district, this installation serves as a captivating dialogue between the past and the present, urging spectators to reevaluate tradition through a modern lens.
Despite its appearance of enveloping an ancient structure, Take Over Jeddah skillfully engages with its surroundings without any physical contact with the building itself. This intentional design choice sparks conversations about the significance and worth of architectural objects, particularly those that have been neglected and symbolize the cultural and societal history of the city. It challenges viewers to contemplate the importance of heritage beyond its mere material existence.
Andrés Reisinger’s installation, Take Over Jeddah, stands tall at an impressive height of seven meters, creating a striking contrast amidst the ancient streets of the Old Town. This deliberate juxtaposition captures the essence of Jeddah, a city that embodies a rich blend of history and modernity, where traditional coral-block architecture and bustling souks coexist with contemporary elements. By bringing together the past and the present, Take Over Jeddah serves as a symbol of contemporary artistic expression within the echoes of centuries-old history.
This artwork represents a significant milestone in Reisinger’s artistic journey, as he seamlessly transitions between the realms of digital and physical art. Its strategic placement in Balad Al-Fann further highlights the transformative power of art in revitalizing cultural spaces and fostering meaningful conversations. Remaining open to the public until March 2024, this installation invites everyone to immerse themselves in the intersection of digital innovation and ancient heritage at the heart of Jeddah.
“It is a tribute to the new energy coursing through the universe, to the resilience and adaptability of cultures,” says Andrés Reisinger. “In Jeddah’s Old Town, where history has been preserved for centuries, my work stands as a symbol of the new narratives that art can formulate, shaping the future while honoring the past.”
