This remarkable residence is the brainchild of the Toronto-based architecture firm Superkül, which meticulously considered the site’s natural features and subtleties while crafting this family home for a private client.
The architects prioritized the preservation of the surrounding environment, ensuring that the design harmonizes with nature. Their commitment to sustainable architecture is evident, as they employed passive design strategies that respect the local ecosystem. This home is designed to foster a deep connection between its inhabitants and the changing seasons, maintaining a low profile that seamlessly integrates with the outdoors.
The design team emphasizes their approach, stating, “Not only did we design with the land, we also found imaginative ways to bring it inside.” A standout feature is the principal bathroom, which opens onto an internal courtyard nestled beneath an aperture in the cleft roof, allowing natural light to flood the space. This private garden is discreetly shielded by slender wooden slats on both sides, creating an airy atmosphere while filtering light into the core of the home.
The house’s overall form draws inspiration from the local landforms, and the interior design reflects a keen sensitivity to its surroundings through carefully chosen colors, materials, and textures. At the same time, it showcases a striking contemporary minimalism that defines its aesthetic.
The single-level layout encompasses a living room, dining area, and the main bedroom and bathroom, while a separate guest wing features a TV room, gym, and garage. Each space is thoughtfully designed to enhance comfort and functionality, ensuring a welcoming environment for residents and guests alike.
Cozy moments abound, such as the firepit nestled beneath the marine-grade plywood vaulted ceiling in the living area.
