Nestled on a mountainside in Margaretville, the Catskills Chalet by APPAREIL Architecture seamlessly integrates with the surrounding forest, creating a distinctive space for gathering and relishing the protected landscape. The living areas are designed to be both inviting and practical, ensuring comfort for the cottage’s owners while also accommodating frequent visitors and guests. Just a few hours from the hustle and bustle of New York City, this home serves as a tranquil sanctuary, fostering a profound connection with nature, away from the clamor of urban life.
This renovation and redesign of the interior stemmed from the unfinished structure of the previous home, providing Appareil Architecture with a unique chance to reinforce their dedication to honoring the existing construction and safeguarding the land. The firm began by preserving the original layout and completing the partially built walls, demonstrating their commitment to the site’s history. Significant interventions were strategically implemented to enhance views, optimize space, and enrich the overall living experience.
The result is a residence that melds effortlessly into its natural surroundings while minimizing its ecological footprint. The design philosophy emphasizes harmony with the magnificent territory, ensuring that the structure complements the environment. As Kim Pariseau, the Founding Architect, states, “Our ultimate goal was to give the impression that this rental cottage has always been here.”
Navigating the challenges of working on the edge of a protected area like the Catskills, which spans 2800 km, required careful consideration. The firm conducted thorough studies of the local context and climate-related issues, allowing them to craft a thoughtful project that adheres to high-quality standards while fulfilling its intended purpose.
To craft a warm, luminous, and inviting atmosphere where both owners and guests can truly feel at home, Appareil Architecture undertook a complete reimagining of the original layout. By relocating the common areas to the second floor, they accentuated the breathtaking, steep views of the mountains, ensuring that everyone could appreciate the stunning scenery. The expansive common room, with its soaring cathedral ceilings and strategically placed skylights, floods the space with natural light. An open staircase seamlessly connects the two levels, creating a fluid transition that fosters a sense of togetherness.
“The experience and hospitality enabled by the spaces we create is always a key element in our design approach. In this residence, it was only natural that the views from the upper floor be visible from common spaces to promote connection with the outside environment and enrich the day-to-day experience of group living,” tells Esther Leduc, Interior Designer, to urdesign.
To cultivate a serene and intimate retreat, the bedrooms and spacious bathroom, complete with a steam shower, were thoughtfully relocated to the lower level. This design choice creates a tranquil haven, while a direct passage from the bedrooms and bathroom to the porch enhances the overall experience, providing easy access to private outdoor spaces and breathtaking vistas of the surrounding peaks.
To craft a warm, sunlit, and inviting environment, the owners have designed a kitchen that seamlessly blends functionality with elegance. This space, stripped of unnecessary embellishments, maximizes roominess while showcasing breathtaking views through expansive windows. In this elongated area, Appareil Architecture has skillfully juxtaposed the rich warmth of local red oak with mineral accents, resulting in a sensory experience that captivates the senses.
At the heart of this living area lies the kitchen island, a perfect gathering spot for cooking and sharing meals with friends and family. This centerpiece stands out with its inviting charm, drawing attention with its sculptural form. Crafted from solid concrete, it offers a striking contrast to the softer materials that envelop it, enhancing the overall aesthetic of the room.
Adjacent to the kitchen, the foyer area fosters a serene atmosphere ideal for reflection and relaxation. It serves as a cozy retreat where individuals can unwind after a day spent in nature. The ceiling’s belt slats and integrated storage lockers echo the flooring’s materiality, creating a seamless flow throughout the space. The interplay of textures within this area highlights the linear design that defines the room, enriching the overall experience.
Appareil Architecture, while honoring the original design, has ingeniously crafted a new volume by incorporating outdoor storage and expanding the second-floor terrace. This thoughtful modification introduces a distinct separation between the first and second floors, evoking the image of a quaint house gently perched on a pedestal. The resulting layout encircles the classic gabled structure with a modern twist, enhancing its overall aesthetic appeal.
To withstand the region’s challenging climate, Appareil Architecture opted for local wood paneling, a material known for its strength and longevity. This careful and considerate design approach has culminated in a rental cottage that pays tribute to its beautiful surroundings, seamlessly blending contemporary elements with the natural landscape.
