With a total area of just 366 square feet, this project ingeniously utilizes a previously neglected corner of a terrace house block, showcasing how even the tiniest spaces can be transformed into functional and sustainable living environments. Pocket Passiv exemplifies creativity through its compact design. Spanning a mere 290 square feet, the two-story structure features a thoughtfully arranged living space. The lower level cleverly combines a study and bedroom, while the upper floor accommodates a kitchen, dining, and living area, all within a minimalist aesthetic.
Pocket Passiv’s most remarkable achievement is its unwavering commitment to sustainability. Meeting the rigorous Passivhaus Plus standard—a benchmark for energy-efficient construction—this house not only consumes minimal energy but also generates as much power as it uses, achieving net-zero energy status. The meticulous design, featuring high-performance insulation and airtight construction, guarantees thermal efficiency and comfort for its residents. With solar panels on the roof and other green technologies, the building remains largely self-sufficient in its energy needs.
The project faced the challenge of balancing various constraints, particularly the demands of its inner-city location alongside the potential future needs of its occupants. From the very beginning, Pocket Passiv was conceived with flexibility at its core. Its innovative layout allows it to function as either an independent residence or an extension of the larger terrace house on the property, creating possibilities for multigenerational living or rental opportunities. Additionally, it boasts the potential to serve as short-term accommodation, complete with its own private street entrance.
The split-level design of Pocket Passiv provides a distinct separation between living areas and private spaces, effectively avoiding the cramped atmosphere often found in many studio apartments. One of the primary challenges in crafting this unique space was to maximize the efficient use of the limited area while catering to the diverse needs of the client. Initially intended as part of a larger renovation for the adjacent terrace house, the studio ultimately evolved into a standalone structure, presenting its own architectural challenges. These included ensuring privacy, optimizing natural light, and seamlessly integrating the new build into its historic surroundings.
The success of the project can be largely credited to the collaborative efforts of the client, architect, and builder, who united their expertise to meet ambitious sustainability goals. The choice of wood shingles, which will gracefully weather over time, ensures that the building will age beautifully, enhancing the architectural character of the Glebe neighborhood.
