UCCA Clay, a museum crafted by the esteemed Japanese studio Kengo Kuma and Associates, emerges as a fresh landmark in Yixing, a city renowned for its deep-rooted heritage in pottery, particularly the exquisite purple clay pottery. Often referred to as the ‘pottery city,’ Yixing boasts a rich history of ceramic craftsmanship, making it the perfect setting for a museum dedicated to this art form. The museum’s location was once a vibrant center of pottery culture, surrounded by a multitude of factories and studios that contributed to the city’s legacy.

This ambitious project is part of a larger redevelopment initiative aimed at revitalizing the area into a lively hub for pottery culture. The vision includes not only the museum but also the establishment of studios and workshops, all while honoring the remnants of the historic pottery factories that once thrived in the region. The design of UCCA Clay, with its undulating rooftop adorned in ceramic panels, stands as a striking sculptural landmark within the cityscape of China.

The architectural team at Kengo Kuma and Associates drew inspiration from the nearby Shushan mountain, a site held in high regard by the celebrated literary figure Su Dongpo from the Northern Song Dynasty. This connection to local history enriches the museum’s narrative, intertwining the realms of art, literature, and geography.

Moreover, the ceramic-clad structure pays homage to the legacy of the dragon kiln, a traditional climbing kiln that has been in continuous operation for over six centuries. This historical reference is woven into the very fabric of the building, creating a dialogue between the past and the present.

The sinuous, peak-like form of the museum is intentionally designed to reflect the silhouette of a mountain range, further embedding the structure within the historical and geographical context of Yixing. This thoughtful design choice not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also reinforces the museum’s connection to the surrounding landscape.

Strategically placed openings throughout this mountain-shaped edifice foster connections to the nearby pottery factories and the canal, enhancing accessibility and emphasizing the site’s historical significance. This integration of space and history invites visitors to engage with the rich tapestry of pottery culture that defines Yixing.

The museum’s facade was crafted in collaboration with local artisans, ensuring that its design captures the true spirit of Yixing’s pottery heritage. The architects have intentionally created an uneven surface, with a glaze that produces a stunning gradient of colors, shifting with the time of day and the changing seasons. This thoughtful design approach results in a captivating array of textures and visual experiences, allowing visitors to feel the ‘temperature’ of pottery in a tangible manner.

The architects further elaborate on their vision: ‘The ceramic panels, reminiscent of the warmth found in Chinese tea utensils and featuring a slightly rough texture from the clay particles, embody the rich history and culture of this pottery city, a legacy that has been cherished for over 1,000 years.’
