Tianjin Zhongshuge, Tientsin, CN / Li Xiang

Architectural design firm X+living has unveiled the stunning Tianjin Zhongshuge bookstore in China, a remarkable three-story structure crafted from bricks and ironwork. Every aspect of the design, from the striking facade to the intricate interior layout, showcases these two materials, creating a cohesive aesthetic. Approximately 400,000 custom-designed bricks have been meticulously utilized throughout the space, each one tailored to fulfill specific spatial and functional needs. The integration of bookshelves, seating areas, and steps into the overall structure highlights the seamless connection between form and function.

The innovative use of trapezoidal brick shapes facilitates smooth transitions between various elements within the bookstore. Li Xiang, the lead architect at X+living, employs a distinctive cutting technique that introduces gaps in the brickwork, allowing the building to breathe and enhancing its dynamic character. The arched doorways rise in tiers, reminiscent of waves, symbolizing the expansive nature of knowledge. Meanwhile, the progressive steps within the bookstore serve as a metaphor for humanity’s relentless pursuit of truth, inviting visitors to embark on a journey that is both physical and spiritual.

As patrons ascend these steps, their exploration of books transforms into a profound ascent, enriching their experience. Li Xiang articulates the design’s intent to blur the physical boundaries of architecture, suggesting that the limits of knowledge and cognition are fluid. The spiritual essence of the space remains clear and resolute, reflecting a harmonious blend of commerce and culture. This hybrid nature of the bookstore dissolves the divide between profit-driven operations and community-oriented sharing, fostering an environment that is open and accessible to all.

The boundaries within the design do not signify rigidity; rather, they are imbued with opportunities for exploration and dialogue. Li Xiang believes that while the design establishes definitions, it simultaneously leaves room for gaps, inviting conflict and challenge to emerge. This approach encourages a dynamic interaction between the space and its visitors, ultimately enriching the experience of knowledge and discovery within the bookstore.

Nestled among a century-old ensemble of Italian red brick structures, Tianjin Zhongshuge draws inspiration from the rich historical and cultural significance of its materials, deeply rooted in both Italian and Chinese architectural traditions. The Shanghai-based design firm X+living employs red brick not only as a structural component but also as a testament to craftsmanship. Each brick is meticulously carved and arranged, echoing a sense of heritage that invites contemplation and reflection.

The thoughtful use of these materials encourages a leisurely pace, reminiscent of the slow, immersive experience of reading. This design invites visitors to pause, engage, and truly connect with the space around them. The architecture is further inspired by the concept of blinds, where light filters through slats, creating intricate patterns of light and shadow. This idea is seamlessly woven into the bookstore’s design, enhancing the overall atmosphere.

Strategically cut dense brick walls introduce gaps that lighten the visual weight of the material, fostering a dynamic interplay between solid and void. This innovative approach enhances transparency and movement within the space, representing a fresh reinterpretation of classical architectural forms. The design also features a deep blue steel plate that runs through the building’s core, its undulating, wave-like shape symbolizing the city’s maritime spirit, where rivers converge and knowledge flows.
