A Quiet Corner in a Bustling City: The Breeze Hall by SHISUO Design Office

SHISUO Design Office proudly presents Breeze Hall, a versatile public space nestled within the serene Lu Xun Memorial Park in Shanghai. This innovative project is strategically located south of the Lu Xun Memorial Museum, transforming a previously fenced-off and underutilized woodland into an inviting urban oasis. The redesign breathes new life into the area by relocating existing trees to carve out pathways, establish gentle boundaries, and create an expansive gathering area that harmonizes architectural and landscape elements, emphasizing the public essence of the site.

The architectural marvel of Breeze Hall features a striking wing-like roof, elegantly supported by slender steel columns. This impressive structure spans 42 meters in length, 15 meters in width, and rises to a height of 12 meters, making it an ideal venue for events, exhibitions, and community gatherings. The use of prefabricated perforated roof panels, meticulously assembled on-site, allows for a delicate interplay of light and air, resulting in a semi-transparent aesthetic that enhances the overall experience of the space.

Low eaves gracefully shield the hall from the vibrant energy of the adjacent commercial street, directing attention towards the lush natural landscape that surrounds it. This landscape is adorned with trees, bamboo, and tranquil water features, creating a serene backdrop for visitors. The thoughtful design ensures that the hall remains a peaceful retreat amidst the urban hustle and bustle.

Previously enclosed and neglected, the site has undergone a remarkable transformation thanks to the vision of SHISUO Design Office. By transplanting trees to establish a welcoming walkway that frames the museum, the architects have crafted a soft boundary for the new building. Additional trees have been strategically placed along the edges of the site, enclosing a spacious open area while preserving the majestic tall trees and bamboo, seamlessly integrating new pathways into the landscape.

The team tackles two significant challenges in the Breeze Hall project: the need to construct a high-quality building within a constrained budget and timeline, while also creating a landmark that harmonizes with the park’s urban landscape. The pavilion’s base elegantly transitions into steps, benches, a bridge, and a waterside platform, seamlessly integrating with the site’s natural inclines. A reflective pool at the base captures the beauty of its surroundings, while rainwater is collected for sustainable reuse. The low eaves serve to dampen the noise from the bustling commercial streets nearby, fostering a tranquil atmosphere within the hall.

Inside Breeze Hall, the base ascends to form an abstract structure that evokes the presence of a silent monument. A canyon-like staircase guides visitors to elevated platforms, where narrow windows frame views of the park, creating a dialogue between light and shadow that highlights the connection between the sacred and the everyday. This thoughtful interplay enhances the overall experience, inviting contemplation and reflection.

Attention to detail is paramount in shaping the tactile and sensory qualities of the building. The soft, beige plaster finishes provide a skin-like texture, while handrails with graceful, arched profiles encourage visitors to pause and enjoy their surroundings. Double-layer perforated panels contribute to a microclimate, benefiting from the evaporation of the pool. Throughout the construction process, the team adapted the design to support local wildlife, ensuring that the pool remains a vital water source for birds, lizards, and other creatures, thereby deepening the building’s integration with its natural environment.
